Located in Covadonga , Asturias (Spain), The Basilica of Santa MarĂ­a la Real is a temple belonging to the Catholic church, which was declared a Basilica on 11 September 1901. 
The church was designed by naturalist, antiquarian , illustrator, bibliophile, German-born archaeologist Roberto Frassinelli and built between 1877 and 1901 by architect Federico Soriano and Aparicio. His style is Romanesque and has been built entirely in pink limestone.


By 1777 a fire destroyed the primeval temple, which was near the Holy Cave which is venerated the Virgin of Covadonga. Consequently it was decided to build a new temple for this purpose alms along Spain requested.


The work would resume after a century by King Alfonso XII. The original idea of ​​this new project was the German scholar Roberto Frassinelli, which was great artist but not being an architect and had to give up the reins of the company to Federico Aparicio, belonging to the Academy of San Fernando, despite this, the German was tasked to direct the works from the crypt.
